Remedial Massage
Provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow. Remedial massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms. Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions are often able to be addressed with Remedial Massage. Remedial massage uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints.
Therapeutic Massage
Is the gentle manipulation of muscle tissue by pressure from the hands; stimulating both the mind and body. The benefits of therapeutic massage range from the relief of chronic tension, the relief of pain or anxiety, helping mental and physical fatigue to improving circulation, fluid retention, increasing flexibility in the joints, and the most important benefits- it is relaxing, enjoyable and promotes good health and good spirit.
To ensure students develop quality of touch, stamina of practice and comprehensive clinical experience, before graduating all students have to complete certain hours in the supervised clinic. This ensures all skills are developed to a high level and the expectations of the public can be met.
At your first appointment the student practitioner will undertake a comprehensive, confidential assessment to determine your requirements for the treatment.
You will then be shown to your private cubicle where the massage therapy will take place. Proper draping and bolstering is provided at all times to ensure your warmth and comfort throughout the massage treatment session. Participants should be aware that in certain treatments as oil is used, it is necessary for the patient to be unclothed for the treatment.

Meet our remedial massage therapist
Quillisa Richardson loves sharing her 22 years of massage therapy experience with her students at Atwea. As a trainer for the HLT52015 Diploma of Remedial Massage, Quillisa enjoys the smaller classes and community feel where you get to know the students on an individual basis for an engaged learning environment.
She often tailors content delivery in class to make it more relatable to the students. “We may be focusing on rehab for broken bones and I will ask the students to discuss any personal experiences with this. I find that it’s a more fun and inclusive way of interpreting content,” Quillisa said.
She enjoys seeing students have that lightbulb moment when they understand content and build confidence in their ability to apply this knowledge to the practical components of the course.
As someone who has experienced injury and nerve pain in both sporting activities and at work, Quillisa has found respite in remedial massage and natural therapy for her treatment. This has grown her interest and passion in this area where she has studied a Diploma of Massage Therapy, Diploma of Natural Therapy and Diploma of Sports Therapy at the ACT College of Natural Therapies.
In addition to working as a trainer, Quillisa also runs her own remedial massage business and benefits from the flexibility and lifestyle balance that comes along with this.
She believes that the Diploma qualification offers students the skills and real world experience to work successfully as a Remedial Massage Therapist after completion and is proud that all of her 2020 alumni have now gained industry employment.
